WordPress 2.3 Beta 1

I see there’s another major WordPress reaslease on it’s way. I really love my blog and Wordpress for enabling me to get things done so easily and effortlessly. The only problem is that sometimes we tend to spend more time upgrading than actually working on our blogs. But I’m sure it’s all in the name of security and perfection.

Talking about Anti-American Sentiment inst’t an easy task especially if you don’t want to be interpreted incorrectly. I would like to mention beforehand that I don’t want to fuel the fire any further and my reasons for writing this post isn’t to attack anyone. What I would like to do is to maybe try to explain why some people have started to look down on the US. All this from the eyes of a common citizen, not from fancy news channels or over fashioned newspapers.

In the first part of my post I tried to explain the reasons which I believed were not to be blamed for the wide spread Anti-American Sentiment. Please note that to fairly discuss and analyse this topic in full it would take me many days possibly weeks, the views expressed here are of a simple citizen and contain no political motivation what so ever.

Criminals or not?

jail.jpgI decided that it’s about time to make a post about a certain topic that has been really getting at me. As most of you would know both the RIAA and the MPAA have been taking many citizens to court especially in the US. Just a few days ago I red yet another story of the big corporations extorting people that have been caught committing a series of Piracy Crimes or Copyright infringements. I won’t even link to all the stories I’ve red because there are literally hundreds if not thousands.

To be fair I do believe the copyright owners have some reason in their complaints but taking people to court and having them serve jail time for making illegal copies of a movie should be considered and outrage. If this wasn’t enough, they have gone the extra mile by bribing political officials to harden penalties for offenders. In my opinion this is wrong and should really be against the law. When reading the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act I fail to see where it declares the obligations of the Corporations “MPAA, RIAA”. Basically they only have rights and the end user only has obligations, very fair if I say so myself. Read more… »

It’s that time of  the year again. If you’re a blogger you no doubt know what I’m talking about. Wordpress is great and has many positive aspects, one of them being the number of Free Templates/Themes available on the internet. Although that is great it can be quite challenging to choose one that suets our every need perfectly.

After looking around my blog for a few minutes I figured it was about time to give things a change. That was the easy part. Now the bigger challenge is to find a template that will look, interact and feel the way I want it to. Giving a blog a new look is something I take very seriously and sometimes the process might take nearly a week to complete. The thing is, I don’t like my blog looking like anyone else’s so every Theme I try  it will normally undergo a few modifications to be 100% unique. You get the picture….

Well this time things are going to be a little different. Since I have a few side projects going on, which are keeping me quite busy, and I’m in a very lazy mood, I’ll just use one that suets my needs without editing it. Why am I writing about this? Who knows. Maybe I need a little encouragement…

Well if any of you know of a cool, simple, minimalist, sexy, attractive, theme that I should try please leave a comment with a link to the site where the theme is located.  Have a nice day…

SuperNova.org is back.

supernova.png
Good news for all the torrent lovers, SuperNova is back and this time for good. Many of you might remember Supernova.org and how after some legal persuasion was taken down, but that’s all old news. Revived buy the PirateBay crew, SuperNove breaths new live and promises to restore its once greatness in the Torrent world.

Starting new torrents sites isn’t news by itself because literally hundreds are born every. What makes this case quite interesting is that its one of the first times that an extinct Torrent tracker site is revived. This will certainly get the attention of the RIAA and friends, for the reasons we all know to well. I personally see this as a sign that Torrent downloading isn’t dead, far from it actually, and that it won’t follow the steps of the once greats like Napster, Kazaa, etc…

My Sicko

SiCKO.jpgYesterday I had the pleasure to take some time off my busy schedule to watch Michael Moore’s latest film, Sicko. First I would like to say it really wasn’t what I expected. The first thing that really surprised me was how little it mentioned the name of President Bush, from all the media attention and taking into consideration his other films, I thought he would have a more prominent role.

As a European many things in the film really got to me but what made me quite sad was in the part in which hospitals chucked out sick people just because they did not have medical insurance. I don’t know if this is a common practice in the US but to think that a Doctor had the courage to deny someone medical treatment just because they are not covered, in other words poor, is inhuman. In my opinion those Doctors are guilty of a crime that should be punished with a prison sentence. How can you tell someone that as a small girl with high fever that she can’t be treated because the hospital that she is in does not belong to the same company where she bought her medical coverage. This for a European is unheard of and simply criminal.

To be fair I have to say that the Health system here isn’t perfect either, actually it’s quite far from that. In Portugal we have very few hospitals and in some cases we do have to pay for some treatments but that hardly ever reaches more than a few Euros. If we go to the family doctor, the one the government forced us to accept, we still have to pay around 3 Euros. The good news is that if you’re pregnant everything is totally free from the date the pregnancy is confirmed, once the baby is born you also get 100 Euros (Currently it’s more) per month during the first year. After that it falls to only around 20 Euros. Furthermore if you want, at the Clinic you can ask for baby food and they’ll give it for free. Just like in most countries when you retire everything is also free.

Like you undoubtedly can see not all Europeans have the right to top notch medical services, some in spite of paying a lot of taxes still have to pay every time they need medical treatment. This is what happens in Portugal and I for one I think it’s totally unfair. If we pay taxes we should be entitled to 100% free medical treatment no matter what our age, sex, social status, political affiliation or for any other reason possibly imaginable. Free Health treatment is like the right to vote, the right to buy property, the right to have an education, yes it is democracy at its finest.

Don’t you just love it when someone says something so right, so dam true and to the point that it makes you stop in time to think of the world around you? I found something like that today on Craigslist and by gum did it make me think and agree with him…

After a long chat about life, politics, and your future career in interior design, you asked me, a man nearly a decade your senior, something like, “What have you learned over the last ten years that you think I should know?” I offered some boilerplate platitude like, “Don’t limit your options because you never know where you’ll end up.” I’m sorry. I wanted to give you some real advice, but I was afraid of offending you. We spoke for a little longer, and I was building up the courage to tell you the truth, but before I could get to the good stuff your beefy bartender boyfriend (who stared at me menacingly the entire time that you and I spoke) whisked you away. Please accept the following paragraphs as the advice I didn’t give but should have.

First of all, your boyfriend is a fucktard loser, and if he’s the kind of guy you usually date you are in real trouble. I’ll admit he’s a good looking fellow: Strong jaw and big muscles, but he is also a moron and has two kids. Jesus, how old is he, twenty-five? And he already has two kids? What the hell are you thinking? Those little bastards aren’t free and if he mans-up to his responsibility he will spend the rest of his life broke. If he doesn’t man-up he is an even bigger loser and you should definitely drop him. I’m not saying you should get with me or anything, I’m thirty and bald and aware of my chances with the nubile tastiness that is you, but you live in a city chock full of universities and I’m sure you can find someone young, good looking, and smart enough to wear a fucking condom when he does the nasty.

Speaking of sex, you need to be careful. Really careful. Drug development is expensive and when big pharmaceuticals make a medicine for a disease it is because that disease is (1) very common; (2) bad enough that people are willing to pay $$$ to treat it; and (3) going to be around long enough for them to get their money back. All those Valtrex commercials you see on TV are telling you that lots of people have herpes. But you don’t know anyone who has herpes, do you? That’s because men who have it don’t tell their partners. You should be prepared for the worst. I’ve never had any STDs, partly because being bald makes getting laid nearly impossible, but also because I use condoms EVERY TIME I HAVE SEX. You should too. Just because you’re not willing to risk your health for a guy doesn’t mean you don’t like him, love him, or want to be with him. It just means that you have a head on your shoulders and some self respect.

Finally, about your career. Honestly, it really isn’t much of one. You live in the Bay. There are enough gay men around here to design and decorate every doghouse, outhouse, whorehouse, and courthouse for 700 miles. Every man you talk to knows this and we all mean to tell you, but you are really hot and humoring you is a condition precedent to licking and sticking your honey pot. Seriously, you really need to think more about exactly what you are going to do for a living because if you end up with Mr. Fucktard, or any facsimile thereof, you will likely be supporting yourself for many years to come.

Good luck and best wishes,

-The Short Bald Guy

spock.gifI figure myself to be just like any ordinary Net geek. Loves all that’s news especially when it offers some new way cool feature that will revolutionize the way people use the internet. Today I noticed that many blogs and some Tech sites applauded and created much buzz around a new little start-up called Spock. A simple explanation of what Spock is can be found on their site.

Spock is the online leader in personal search, helping users find and discover people. With over one hundred million people already indexed and millions added every day, Spock is building the broadest and deepest people specific search engine.

The reason for me writing this post isn’t to marvel at what ever Spock is and how I used it for two seconds and thought it to be the best invention since the automatic bread slicer. The truth is that from what I saw Spock was a major let down, not only because I really couldn’t find any information on all the names I searched but also because the attention that Spock received by the media was way, way, way over rated. Don’t get me wrong, I do think it’s a great idea to crate a people search engine but I doubt Spock is the best that can be done, and yes I do know it’s in Beta stage, like most of the net nowadays I might add…

What I’m basically trying to say here is. Aren’t we creating a lot of fuss about every stupid little thing that pops up on the net? Do these start-ups really deserve our excitement and approval when all they really are is a beginning to something that might, or not, work. Every day I read about these wonder projects that after the much artificial hype fade away and disappear into the dark corners of the internet never to seen or heard of again. With this I conclude saying that for me Spock really had not spark!!!
