A few days ago I decided to tweak a few things on my blog to see if I could attract more visitors. What I decided to do was go to old posts and change the heading to something simpler for search engines to understand. Headings like “My adventures in a capitalist’s world” changed to “Things I learned when starting my business”. Another test I did was to create a few more high quality pages on my blog with good headings and the best information I could possibly write. I know this might sound totally stupid but the results obtained just a few days after proved that my speculations were spot on.

The amount of traffic my blog started receiving from Google just because of those tow factors was amazing, the results speak for themselves. After only one week my traffic went from some 200 to 300 first time visitors per day. Google represented around 30% of my traffic, a few days latter that number had jumped to %40.

My earnings registered the biggest increase ever but this could be attributed to two factors. Just recently I started inserting ads on the actual posts, which I strongly recommend. This method as proven to be highly effective and click-thru rate double or triple in the first few days. After inserting ads on posts my blog would only get 7 to 8 clicks per day, after creating my pages and changing old posts headings it jumped to more than 20 per day and yesterday a new record was obtained with 32 clicks.

To conclude, when creating a heading try to use something that Google can understand and that contains a few keywords of what the actual post is about. My biggest mistake was to always try creating headings excessively artistic that worked well for humans but did not produce any results for search engines. These new less flamboyant headings might seem dull but think of it this way, what good is a highly creative heading if no one is going to find it and read your posts.

That’s interesting. I’ve wondered what effect this sort of thing would have. Are you using any meta/keyword/header plugins?
