Criminals or not?

jail.jpgI decided that it’s about time to make a post about a certain topic that has been really getting at me. As most of you would know both the RIAA and the MPAA have been taking many citizens to court especially in the US. Just a few days ago I red yet another story of the big corporations extorting people that have been caught committing a series of Piracy Crimes or Copyright infringements. I won’t even link to all the stories I’ve red because there are literally hundreds if not thousands.

To be fair I do believe the copyright owners have some reason in their complaints but taking people to court and having them serve jail time for making illegal copies of a movie should be considered and outrage. If this wasn’t enough, they have gone the extra mile by bribing political officials to harden penalties for offenders. In my opinion this is wrong and should really be against the law. When reading the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act I fail to see where it declares the obligations of the Corporations “MPAA, RIAA”. Basically they only have rights and the end user only has obligations, very fair if I say so myself.

I’m not going to make a big political speech about what’s right and what’s wrong simply because corruption is so visible it would be like making a overstatement. We all know the politicians aren’t doing their job and the ordinary citizen is getting the short end of the deal “poor citizens that is, rich may not apply”. Once again, I’m not making any political analyzes, just telling it as I see it. What is really making me sick and sad at the same time is seeing that people are serving prison sentences for these crimes. First, if you made money from these crimes I do agree some time would be just, but going to jail because you uploaded a movie or film a few minutes while on a theater, give me a break. I think Americans are so out of reality when dishing out prison sentences that 5 years looks reasonable for any crime. Look at these contradicting stats, America’s Prison population, Crime rate in America, which shows that sending people to jail isn’t really working. Read this very interesting article, 1 in every 142 US citizens are in jail. Furthemore statistics also reveal that prison only teaches inmates how to be real criminals, few are the ones that come out rehabilitated.

If we all know that sending people to prison isn’t the solution why do they “not we because I’m not American” still resort to the same method of punishment over and over again. Isn’t educating people better? Even dishing out fines? Haven’t things gotten to the point of no control? When will it stop? These are questions I ask myself every day and still haven’t found any reasonable answers.
