While many require this only when starting, some send their drivers on a yearly or bi-yearly basis as a refresher course. Experts recommend that everyone receive training as often as they need to.

Training courses frequently contain three separate parts: safety, operation procedures, and check-throughs/general maintenance. The first goes through the safety features that may be in place as well as procedural safety for driving the unit. The second goes through the various components of the equipment and the basics of how they work. The last will take future drivers through the steps of looking over the equipment and load before safely moving equipment. It may also contain basic maintenance instructions such as checking fluid levels, lines, etc.
