Do I Really Need To Worry About SEO?

With all the jargon tossed around on the Internet, it can sometimes be tough to know exactly what you need to create a successful, popular website. Of all the important components of building a good website, though, search engine optimization, or SEO, is arguably the most important (after building the website itself). Why? Because unless you optimize your website for search engines, your chances of getting traffic are pretty dismal.

Maybe you’re wondering, “What exactly is SEO, and why do I need it?” Well, basically, search engine optimization is anything you do that makes search engines such as Google and Bing give you a positive ranking. Whenever you search for something on Google, you’ll note that every search term turns up thousands – sometimes millions – of websites. So how did the top ones get on top? The answer is search engine optimization.

Here are some basic facts you should know about Seo. Once you know these facts, you can make up your mind as to how much SEO you need, and how you should do it.

1.) You need to be constantly climbing in search engine rankings, or you will go down. It’s a bit like a pile of sand, and you’re clawing your way to the top. The second you stop pushing up, you sink. The same holds true with search engine optimization. The harder you climb, i.e., the more you do, the higher you go.

2.) Seo is more than keywords. Putting accurate, complete meta information into your pages is important; but that is only one of the strategies you can employ. You need to be constantly adding rich content to your site. This means that the way you name the images on your site and the type of content you have on your website influences where Google places you.

3.) Search engine optimization is not difficult, nor is it complicated. Some Seo professionals like to use big words and complicated phrases. Don’t let them fool you. It’s not that difficult to optimize your own site. However, it is time consuming and repetitive. This is why lots of companies, from Dell and Amazon, to even Google, hire outside companies to help with their search engine optimization needs.

4.) Search engine optimization helps you find and target the type of people that you want to come to your site. As you tweak your site, Google is able to pinpoint the types of things that you do. For example, let’s say you own a landscaping company in Nowhere, Illinois. There are thousands of landcaping companies with sites online, so how can you get people around Nowhere to yours? If you want to grow your business, you want your website to show up high in search engine rankings that people around Nowhere are going to see. This means that you need to create a comprehensive plan to target the types of keywords and sites that people in Nowhere are going to frequent. So let’s say there’s a park in Nowhere that everyone goes to. In this park, there’s a well-known statue commemorating the veterans of World War 2 called the “Statue of the Fallen Heroes.” You can make that work for you. Maybe you put a picture of that statue in your header. You can name that something like “Statue_Fallen_Heroes_Nowhere_Illinois.jpg.” You can also put references to the park in your header, in the text of your site, and in the code. So the next time someone in Nowhere, Illinois is looking for a landscaping company, your site will pop up right near the top. If they go online to see what the park’s schedule is, there’s your site again. If they go to Google to search for the website of City Hall and type in “Nowhere, Illinois,” well, there’s your site again. The point is, the more you can tie your site in with your target audience, the more you can reach them. And the more often they see your site, the more likely they are to remember it. Remember: repetition, repetition, repetition. Many people hire search engine optimization experts for this type of work because it’s time consuming and rather boring.

5.) Without search engine optimization, your website will never reach the people you want to reach. Even in our day of online advertising, most people still find websites on Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Ask.com, and the other popular search engines. Unless you are the only site in the world that does what you do, you will wind up on the back pages without search engine optimization. The experts who study these things tell us that few people ever get past the first ten results on Google.

So don’t waste your time, money, or website! Get busy and use search engine optimization to push your website up in Google, get more visitors, and make more money!
